May 4, 2105 was the day I left home for Plateau state. My mind was blank as to what to expect because I didn’t know what serving the country looks like. I left all I know behind and journeyed into what I hoped for. That should bring up a question in your mind. What was my hope for the service year?
I wished for a time that will turn me into a haven for wisdom, knowledge and understanding in a village. Serve as a teacher that will impact more than the curriculum of the class work and live for long in the hearts of the community, but the Master had a different plan.
Few days into camp, I was invited for an interview that led into a series of interviews and later became a story with several chapters. Little did I know that the service year would bring into my life an experience that will cause me to unlearn and re-learn when I thought that all I will do is make people know what I have learnt.
It all started on camp with myriad of experiences that told me that a world bigger than Obafemi Awolowo University exists. Ladies showed me ‘pepper’ in several dimensions. In kitchen, I was laughed at by two fair ladies because I couldn’t peel yam perfectly, while one took my space on a queue for registration without any apology.
My room may not be the most notorious, but it was filled with all sorts of experiences. I mostly sit on my bed beholding the goodness of God in the lives of people around me. Their conversations always enter my quiet soul resting on my bed. I was mostly sad at their proud achievements in cultism, drinking and womanizing. One told me that I would not have experience when I get married because I have never had sex before.
Weird World!
