Abraham gave birth to many sons, but Isaac is the promised child who inherited the covenant. Isaac gave birth to Esau (the father of Edom) and Jacob (who was renamed Israel). Israel went to captivity in Egypt for 430 years before they came out and were officially declared a nation in the days of Joshua, son of Nun. They went through a period of being led by Judges before they moved into the days of the kings. During the reign of the Kings, the nation of Israel was made up of 12 tribes who were the direct sons of Jacob. The nation expanded greatly as a result of the wars the Lord helped them to conquer especially in the days of David. It was the greatest in the entire region. The great kingdom however broke up during the days of the grandchild of David- Rehoboam. Rehoboam placed a heavy tax on the Israelites and 10 tribes rebelled and formed another nation.
