During the reign of the Kings, the nation of Israel was made up of 12 tribes who were the direct sons of Jacob. The nation expanded greatly as a result of the wars the Lord helped them to conquer especially in the days of David. It was the greatest in the entire region. The great kingdom however broke up during the days of the grandchild of David- Rehoboam. Rehoboam placed a heavy tax on the Israelites and 10 tribes rebelled and formed another nation. Rehoboam was left with 2 tribes- Judah and Benjamin.

The 10 tribes maintained the name Israel while the two tribes too up the name Judah. Years later, the 10 tribes were captured by the Assyrians (Not to be confused with the present day Syria. Assyrians were a race that comprise of a part of today's Iraq, Iran, Syria and Turkey.) The Assyrians did a terrible thing to the 10 tribes. They knew that the Israelites would not mix with them even in captivity, so to wipe out the race of the 10 tribes, they killed their men and married their women. They gave birth to a people know in the days of Jesus as Samaritans and that explained why the Jews considered them unclean!
What happened to the 2 remaining tribes? Judah was also captured by Babylon (Iraq) and later Medes and Persia (Iran). They were however preserved unlike their brothers in Assyria. They returned to their land during the days of King Artaxerxes of Persia. Nehemiah was very instrumental to this returning. The returned to their land that they have left for 70 years. It was easy for them to reclaim the land because some of them were not carried away by the Babylonians. It was during this captivity that they began to answer the name- Jews which signify the people who originated from Abraham and practice Judaism.
The Jews were captured again in 70 AD and this was the most brutal of it all. The entire land was burnt down and the remaining descendants of Jacob were scattered. The nation was lost. The temple which was built before Jesus came (started during the days of Nehemiah) was destroyed and all that is left of it is the western part of the wall. On the map of the world, Israel had been wiped out!

The Jews were without a nation of their own, but had to live as foreigners across the middle East and Europe for the next 1,800 years! It is amazing how they survived those periods. During the world war 1, Britain proposed that a part of Palestine should be carved out and given to Israel. The nations in the middle East were vehemently against the idea. Eventually, in 1948, Israel was declared an independent nation. Several wars followed this pronouncement. The nations in the region waged wars against the baby nation, but they couldn't prevail.
Why have the Jews been indestructible? Arab nations still want to wipe out Israel till today; they are surrounded by Enemies, but they are still standing. The Jews are a monument to the existence of God. They validate all of the stories that we read from the bible. The devil wants to wipe them out to take away the witness of God away from the earth. This is why the Jews are important to God. In the next post, I will share the role they will play in the last days agenda of God
