My strength
level did not show any significant rise with Firesola’s constant visits. I was
dying. Something has to be done. My doctor called my pastor and advised that
they allow Seun to visit in an attempt to save me. My pastor did not know how
to pull it off. Firesola had mentioned it too. ‘Dad misses mum’. So he visited
the Ogundejis. Seun had grown pale. She had to do a lot of tests. STDs. And
yes, she had a few she was treating. She needed help to stay away from hard
drugs too. She was really in a mess. My pastor could not hide his
disappointment, but pleaded that Seun would do this for her husband even if it
will be the last thing she would do for him.
Seun declined
the assignment. ‘He won’t wake up because of me’ and ‘I can’t stand before his
presence after all I have done to him’ were her excuses. My pastor agreed, but
Rev’d didn’t. ‘Why do you think he answered your call? Why do you think he came
to that house? Why do you think he took a bullet for you after all your man
said? Why do you think his strength level didn’t increase even after hearing
Firesola’s voice? Who do you think he is waiting for?’ Rev’d was convinced that
I would come out of coma if I hear Seun’s voice. It had to be a covert
operation. None of my friends must know that Seun came close to the hospital
not to talk of coming close to my bed.
That night, she
wore a cloth I had bought for her during our honeymoon. Used her perfume very
strongly. She knew my code. Walking into the ward was hard. She didn’t know
what to expect. Everyone involved knew that this would either be the last day
of my life or a turnaround for me. She walked into the ward alone; nobody
wanted to be seen with her. Except Rev’d. He spoke first. ‘I have forgiven Seun
and I believe you have been waiting for her. So, I have brought her here today.
Listen to her and make your decision, but don’t forget that Firesola needs both
of you. I will leave now so you can discuss’. Rev’d is hilarious. Discuss with
a man in coma? He spoke like I could decide to stay alive or die.
Seun came close
to my bed side. She sat down and held my hand. ‘This is Oluwaseun. I am very
scared right now.’ She sobbed for a long while before she could find her voice.
She was broken. ‘I went to that seminar that day and we were told about women
doing great things in their career. They painted a picture where family
responsibilities were against career success. They mentioned that many husbands
stand in the way of their wife’s success and all the examples they gave matched
you 100%. I was totally brainwashed. I saw you and Firesola as obstacles to my
career success. It was like I came out of that meeting another person; like I
was hypnotized’.
‘Since that day,
my life began to take a downward turn. Valentino is the son of our CEO and he
had always wanted a relationship with me, but I never gave him attention. He
posed himself as the right person that can help me drive my career to the
highest points and I lost focus. Eventually, I got to know that he arranged
that seminar specifically because of me. I had told him of some of the
misunderstandings we had. He used it against me’. At this point, she broke down
into tears. ‘I walked right into the devil’s web despite your warnings. I am
shocked that you came to rescue me from his hands. You even took a bullet for
me despite all I did’. She took a deep breathe at this point. ‘I’m sorry I
cannot return to you. It’s too late. You and Firesola are too good for me.
Please, let me go; I am too ashamed to be your wife again. Come back and take
care of Firesola. Your work with her is amazing. Good bye.’ She kissed my
forehead and left.
