I thought it was my alarm that was ringing until I checked my wall clock and saw 4:28am. Could that be a call? Who could that be? I had switched off my phone the previous night to preserve the low battery that was on it, but I switched it back on around 2am when I woke up and saw that power has been restored.
I picked my phone and saw 37 missed calls and 2 messages. My heart beat immediately collected a baton and began to race. I mumbled tongues under my breathe as I checked the missed calls. Different numbers; my parents, siblings, pastors, friends. What's happening?
I checked the messages and I became lost. "Olanrewaju, what is going on? Your Dad just saw your wedding invitation on Facebook", "Lanre, what is this on your Facebook page? You're getting married?" The first was from Mum while the second was my Pastor's. I adjusted myself and read the messages again. My wedding invitation?
I switched on my data and WhatsApp messages poured in- "Congratulations, you didn't even tell us", "Guy, you wan marry?", "Is a lie! Ghen Ghen!!", "My pastor was doing low key something", "Aso ebi something", "finally, I will see your dance steps". My friends were already "making plans". Abi I am dreaming ni?
Facebook notifications nko? This person commented on a photo you were tagged in, that person commented on a photo you were tagged in. It was like film trick. You needed to see my face as the notifications poured in. Kilonsele? Who is getting married?
I opened my Facebook app. Verily verily I say unto you, brothers and sisters, I saw my wedding invitation. I stood behind this sister, firmly holding her waist and we were smiling from ear to ear. And I was looking dap abi dapper in my suit or is it tuxedo. The thing was so nice I wished I have it. I even looked more handsome in the picture.
The second picture was the wedding invite. I am getting married in two weeks. The lady is a member of the church I just joined in Lagos and I have never said more than good morning to her in my entire life. How come we are standing inside this picture and we are getting married in two weeks? And she is even thanking people who are commenting "Congratulations, may God keep your home".
I wanted to switch off my phone, but I thought of my parents. They own 31 out of the 37 missed calls. I must get to Ibadan!
