I started my study before the political formation of the country. The land has always existed, but the country came into existence in 1914 when Lord Lugard amalgamated the northern and southern protectorate.
Historically, the community of the land that is now known as Nigeria existed in tribes. The northern Hausa and Kanuri tribes and the middle belt’s Birom, Tiv, Nupe and moving towards the forest west, we have the Yoruba. The south is largely Igbos, Efik, Ibibios and others. This is not a history lesson, so I will stop there.
The first appearance of the hand of the Lord came when Usman Dan Fodio’s quest to spread Jihad in the land was suddenly stopped by a Watcher. Usman spent about almost the last 10 years of his life indoor. He handled the war to his brother Abdullahi and son Muhammed Bello.
Indoor, he laid claim over the land that his brother and son were fighting for. His claim was going to be sealed when a watcher appeared. Watchers often do this when a man is about to go beyond his boundary and tamper with God’s eternal counsel. I shared about this fully in the series I did earlier in the year. The intrusion of the watcher showed that there was another intention for the land that would later become Nigeria other than Jihad. This happened in the early 19th century.
By the time we would turn the century, the British were in the land and a key figure I will like to mention here is Sir George Goldie. Sir Goldie is not a popular name in the history of Nigeria, but his influence in the formation of the country is quite interesting. He literarily bought the country and sold it. You can get details of that from the many materials available on google.
I have learned that the greatest weapon of the enemy is the ability to stay unnoticed in a place. This is the pattern that Goldie followed. His influence was not because of his great negotiating ability, but his depth in the realm of the spirit. George Goldie was a member of the Free Mason cult group of England. In fact, his brother was the head of the cult at the time he was pulling stunts in West Africa. When someone pays a price over you, he could lay claim on you. George Goldie’s hold on Nigeria was so strong that you wouldn’t notice it. He was stealth. 10 years to his death, he burnt all documents linking him to the formation of Nigeria and placed a curse on any of his children who wrote his story or assist anyone to write about him.
The coat of arm of Nigeria was adopted on May 20, 1960. If Goldie were to be alive, he would be celebrating his birthday alongside. He established the trade system we have presently. Although, we may not know a lot about Goldie, we can learn about his from one of his mentees who wasn’t wise enough to keep his identity stealth like Goldie. His name is Cecil John Rhodes of South Africa. Sounds familiar? Now, you have an idea of what we are dealing with.
Therefore, we see two men whose sacrifices till today lays claim on Nigeria. When the British came into the land, they parleyed with the Fulani elites who held the political and social leadership of the North. They knew who was in charge. Many parts of the south were taken by force. As at this time, the land has been sown into darkness so much that it was almost impossible to believe a change. Structures for Jihad, Corruption, and Cultism had been cast in stones in different corners of the land. We were already in a mess before we knew it. Multiple battles awaited anyone who would call for a deliverance.
The hand of the Lord became stronger in Nigeria when some men began to hunger more for the move of God like it was in America at that time. The answer were two men. A British and a Yoruba man: Sydney Elton and Ayo Babalola. The battle was fierce, but God has a character. He seems to love impossible situations. Taking Israel through the red sea, selecting Saul of Tarsus and the commitment to Israel as a nation proves that God does not give up.
