Every territory have a role to play in the scheme of things that pertain to the end times. Partly because territories can determine the course of the lives of people living there and partly because territories can have specific purpose in God. As a result of these, it is important to be able to map territories and bring our prophetic intelligence for intercessors, apostles and disciples.
Spiritual mapping is usually a combination of historical research, divine revelation, strategic tracking of strongholds, wells of life or redemptive gifts, the identification of the gates into the territory and the operational thrones in the territory. The goal of spiritual mapping is usually for God's servants- intercessors, apostles and disciples to be able to establish the work of God in their hands in the land.
In my 9+ years of digging the scribal anointing and my 4+ years of operation from the office of a prophetic scribe, I have, working together with intercessors and prophetic companies, mapped several territories that revealed positive and negative hidden things useful for prayers in establishing the kindgom of God. Now, let us dive fully into the process.
1- Spiritual Preparation: The scribal prophet is an offshoot of the prophetic anointing and so, it is fueled by the consecrations of a prophet which are fasted life, intimacy with the Spirit and purity. To begin the process of mapping a territory, start with prayers-asking God to reveal things to you while you stay in fastings and ministering to the LORD.
2- Historical Research: History is filled with patterns, stories and information about the things affecting us today and if we will stop those things or prevent them from happening in our own life, we must have a good grasp of the history. Searching online may not be enough in some cases as many cities and villags do not have a well documented history. So, you may need to meet with people who have lived for so long in the place to tell you the history of the land. As you research, pay attention to patterns, names, covenants, active shrines, monarchical rituals, occultic groups present, prevalence character and dominant religion.
3- Divine Revelation: There are cases in history where some people deliberately wiped off their story from history becuase they do not want what they have done to be undone. Example is the case of Sir George Goldie. Attimes, some events were not documented at all which are the limitations of historical research. Ths is why divine revelation is important. In 2018, God took me back in time to the days of Usman Dan Fodio where I saw the spiritual strategies he used to fight his wars. Dreams and visions play a critical role in spiritual mapping. Attimes, God just impresses what happened on your mind during meditation, as it happened for me when I was digging into the life of Oranmiyan.
4- Strategic Tracking of Strongholds: This aspect is very important and can be identified by critically studying the thinking pattern and lifestyle of the people living in the territory. In Nigeria, corruption is a stronghold. In yoruba land, lasciviousness and hedonism is a stronghold, the Hausa have low regard for humanity while the igbo tribe have greed and pride. USA and the Western world at large, have been caught in humanism and carnality. Caveat: These are broadbands which should not apply to the man in Christ whose soul is being transformed. However, they are valid examples.
5- Identification of Wells & Redemptive Gifts: It is not all there is in territiories that are bad. There are some lands that carry wells of righteousness; lands like this have experienced a great outpouring of the Spirit in the past or a man who carried an unusual grace in God passed on in the land. These lands usually have an unusual open heavens and anointings to touch God. A good example in Nigeria is Ilesa in Osun State where the famous 1930 revival began. Bida in Niger state is another.
6- Identification of Gates: Gates are not just entry points into a city, but they are entry points where spirit beings begin operations that they hope to spread in a city. When Jihadists wanted to enter the South West, they passed through Ilorin. When God wanted to raise pentecostal leaders that would permeate the entire south west, he made sure they passed through Ilorin. If you want to start a fight in Ibadan that would engulf the entire land, start it in Iwo Road. These are gates into the land. Marine spirits have long contested for Lagos/Badagry and Lokoja. Eyenkorin in Ilorin, Olaiya in Oosgbo. Every territory have spots like this. It could be the location of the monarch's throne, marketplace, T-junction or monumental places in the land. These spots are usually contested and should places where prayers are offered consistently.
7- Thrones: As identified in scripture, the spirit rulers of a place are actually princes, principalities and thrones. Paul described them as wicknedness in high places. These are spirits that claim ownership of the land and their footprints are seen in the spiritual giants that have walked the land. It is their footprints that we use to identify them. For example, the yoruba land have a strong idolatrous throne seen in high level occultism, worship of idols and witchcraft. Ogun, Oyo, Osun and Ekiti states are rift in these.
These are the 7 steps I take in mapping a territory and God has been merciful to me. I must say that the devil fights spiritual mapping because it exposes the hidden weapons of the enemy and empowers intercessors to break the hold of the devil. I remember how I started getting warnings in my dream when I was doing the research on Usman Dan Fodio. Stay strong in prayers. Call for back-ups if necessary. Every scribe needs prayer back-ups.
